The Main Stour Valley Railway line between Cambridge / Shelford, Linton, Haverhill, Clare and Sudbury, opened during the 1860's and was closed on 06 March 1967.
Since the closure of the line in 1967, the population of Haverhill has grown dramatically and it is one of the UK's largest towns without a railway station.
Bus services to the surrounding villages have been reduced over the years so that only a few journeys a day on two different routes make it between Haverhill and Sudbury during the week, and there is no weekend service at all.
The opening of East West Rail services between Oxford and Cambridge will provide a major boost to the re-opening campaign for the Stour valley Line for the demand for travel both on the line itself and for through travel between NE Essex and Colchester and East West Rail will rise dramatically.
